Billy Batson's Big Birthday Bash

If it had been anyone else Billy totally would have begged off hanging out with them after work that night. He had school the next day and was a little tired but he'd have to be mostly dead before he cancelled on his girlfriend. Even then he'd probably do his best to make it to her, especially with everything she was going through right now. She'd told him to just let himself into her place, which gave him a good idea of how she was feeling.

Sliding off Naga as he arrived at her apartment building he sent the polar bear dog off to do whatever it did when not hanging around with Billy. Eat fish and bother Ellie, probably. Izzy had a lot of black clothes and it turned out polar bear dog fur was kind of a pain to get off of fabric so he figured .

Heading up to her apartment he fought back a yawn as he adjusted his backpack. It wasn't even that late but maybe he could just crash at Izzy's place tonight and head straight to school from here. It would definitely save him some time.

Testing the door he found it unlocked and pushed it open. Anyone else he would have definitely said something about how dangerous it was but if someone broke into Izzy's apartment to rob her then they were totally the ones in danger.

"Babe, you in?" he called out, frowning when the lights weren't on. That didn't seem like a great thing, if she was here with the lights off. "I brought some food from work if you're hungry..."

Billy watched Tim have to deal with the suit in a bag and was really glad that he didn't have to mess with that. Yeah it meant that he was just a normal person that was easy to beat up and kill when he wasn't Shazam but he also didn't have to worry about changing outfits. Pretty fair trade off as far as he was concerned.

"Dude, you didn't have to get me a present," he said, although he smiled when he took the box. He had no idea what the heck it could be but he was pretty sure it was going to be awesome. "It's, uh, not going to blow up or anything is it?"

You had to check, Bats were weird like that.

"Yeah, it was pretty awesome of her to do this," Billy agreed. Izzy liked planning and throwing parties but he knew she wouldn't have done this for anyone else, really. It made him feel pretty special.

"Wait, what do you mean even if she's in white?"

Not realizing that Isabelle hadn't explained the significance of the color, Magnus blinked in mild surprise. Then again, he realized, it would be something she just did and didn't think about or explain. She looked fabulous enough in everything that he doubted Billy would have noticed.

"Shadowhunter thing. Black for hunting through the night, for death and mourning, the color's white," he explained, in that singsong way of someone reciting a poem, not really speaking.

"They said that to you?" Alec was surprised only because he thought public schools and public education were supposed to be encouraging in a positive way. He'd heard sentiments like that thrown at him before but he'd thought mundanes (and he knew Billy wasn't a mundane but he'd lived in the midst of them) weren't like that.

"I bet it was satisfying to show them up," Alec said, nodding. "I'd say you've amounted to something."

"I'm just checking," Tim clarifies, taking another sip of his drink.

"You have really good taste. And it's a nice contrast from how I saw him spending his birthday last year. You're an awesome girlfriend, you know?"

He looks at the rest of the party. It isn't big, but knowing Billy, it was perfect. His heart aches a bit, thinking of another surprise birthday party like this, spent at home with a small group of close friends and relatives. Home has been more on his mind lately. A testiment to how lonely he's felt in Darrow, in spite of the good friends he's made.

Tim pushes the memories and feelings aside, downing the rest of his drink.

"So, how exactly did you two meet? Billy never told me."

Tim raised a brow at the question.

"Er, I definitely hope not. I mean, I made it to be helpful for people. I thought you'd like one to help with college next year. Among other things."

Isabelle doesn't know how Billy spent his birthday last year, but from the surprise on his face at this little party, it can't have been much at all. He deserves more than that, so Isabelle had been determined to do something, even if a party wasn't really what she wanted right now. Today isn't about her, it's about Billy, and she's determined that he have a good time.

He asks how they met, and Isabelle smiles despite herself. "He fell off a fire escape," she says, a smirk on her lips. Sometimes she can't believe that that's where they started all of this; with Billy falling off a fire escape and Isabelle pointing a knife at him.

"It was the day I first got here, and he was trying to show off. I threatened him with a knife, the rest is history I guess." It had been a long while before she entertained the idea of a relationship with him, though. He'd been dating someone else, back then, and mostly she'd liked flirting with him just to see him blush. Things are different now though, except she can't put her finger on when exactly the shift happened.

"I suppose I did." And I find myself laughing at the how ridiculous I must sound. "Were you truly surprised? Everyone was very nervous as we waited for you."

I can't say it's something I'd enjoy, a dozen people in my house waiting to jump out at me. Knowing me, I'd likely throw a fireball or two before realizing it was a joke. Or just teleport out and across the street.

Tim laughs outright. Billy absolutely has a type.

"That sounds like him. And that's totally a meet-cute, by the way. When I met the girl I had the longest relationship with back home, she smacked me in the face with a brick. Stuff like that makes me think that maybe a bad first meeting is actually a sign of good things to come in a relationship."

"Man, it weirds me out I can just buy meat. Soup. Potatoes. Being able to just go out and buy cake is a whole other level," Ellie said.

There were a lot of cans in the cupboards of Konoha-Uchi. She wasn't as bad about reflexively getting survival supplies as she'd been, but she still usually ended up getting a can or two beyond what she needed every shopping trip.

"Just entire stores where all they sell is cake. It's nuts!"

She doesn't think it had necessarily been a bad first meeting, though she can see why he'd think so from what she's told him so far. But she'd enjoyed messing with Billy that first day, until he caught on to who she was and took her to Alec. That alone had proved he was someone worth trusting.

"That sounds painful," Isabelle says with a grimace. A brick is hardly an elegant weapon but she supposes that whatever is on hand would do the job. There's clearly a story there though, but she wonders if he wants to talk about it. If he's talking about back home, there's a good chance that girl isn't here.

She thinks of her own back home, about how as far as her confused memories are concerned, she'd fallen in love with Simon. She thinks about their first meeting, the way he'd forced himself to eat her cooking just to impress her. It hadn't been a bad first meeting for her, but it probably was for him. Still, thinking about Simon sends her head in circles these days, so she shakes it off.

"I'll make sure to tell Billy he needs to forgive me for the knife thing, then." She's pretty sure Billy forgave her a long time ago, in actual fact, but they've never really brought it up again.

"O-oh," Billy said. The way that Magnus said that it made total sense. When you normally dressed in black then wearing that for a funeral didn't make a lot of sense. He felt kinda like an ass for not knowing that before though. "I just thought she was wearing it because she looks so good in it."

And now he felt kinda bad for staring at her in it so much. You totally shouldn't be thinking about how hot someone looks in funeral clothes, that was messed up.

"Yeah but I kinda don't blame them," Billy admitted. He was totally a little shit back then and probably wouldn't have amounted to anything if he didn't start to change. Yeah teachers probably shouldn't say that kinda stuff to a student but they hadn't exactly been wrong at the time.

"But I've mostly made something of myself because of people helping me. But I totally decided to accept their help so that counts. Go me."

"Dude, thanks!" he said as he opened the box.

Billy had no idea what it was. Well, he knew it was a watch but it was a giant, blank watch that honestly looked like it was broken. Fortunately he was pretty good at faking enthusiasm so he could act like it was super cool. Plus it was nice of Tim to get him anything at all, even if it was something that didn't work.

"I didn't think that anyone even knew it was my birthday, actually. I don't know how Izzy knew," he admitted. She had probably snuck a look at his ID or something, she was sneaky like that. He was glad that she had though because it gave him an excuse to hang out with friends like Eleanor. "So I was pretty surprised and kinda freaked out for a second."

Billy sometimes forgot about the sort of world that Ellie came from and just how different this all was for her. Cake, ice cream, and other stuff were probably impossible where she was from. He knew how hard it was to get food in this world sometimes so wherever she came from must have had it crazy bad. Still, cake whenever you wanted was pretty awesome.

"Okay, so what's the first thing you ate until you got sick then? And not because it was bad but because eating a whole cake by yourself is going to make you puke."

"Chocolate," Ellie said, thinking back. "It wasn't even that much of it, it was just- I mean, holy shit, I'd heard about chocolate but I didn't know."

Although it hadn't been a small amount, either.

"Go you," Alec repeated with a nod of his head. He was sincere, though, because he knew how hard it was to ask for help. Alec himself hated asking for help because he thought it was admitting weakness, vulnerability and the last thing he was trained to do was to show any sort of fear.

"There's no shortage of people who want to help here either," Alec noted, glancing around. "My sister would be the first one in line."

When she kissed him again Billy felt that crazy-weird flutter in his stomach that he only got around Izzy. It was like when he became Shazam, only better. Billy would almost say it made him giddy but he was way too cool to actually be "giddy".

"Is it super dumb if I say your kisses are better than magic? Because they are totally better than magic," he said, trying to keep his hands from wandering too much. It was hard because Izzy was... well she was Izzy but they were at a party with a bunch of friends so he needed to behave.

"And I definitely want more kisses after my present," he said, leaning in just a bit to kiss behind her ear. "Then sex. Wait... that sounded super lame. Do over. I want you. I just... I want to be with you all night and wake up next to you and hold you while we sleep and I know I'm a totally a huge dork for saying that but it's all true."

[Somehow this notif got lost in my emails and I am so, SO sorry that I didn't notice until now!]

"It was, but the brick did very little to slow down falling in love with Steph," he admits with a shrug. Really, the only things that slowed down anything between them before getting together were the fact that he couldn't reveal his civilian identity and, well, Ariana.

"I doubt it's necessary, though. I've caught how Billy looks at you."

When Stephanie disappeared, and he found out she was Billy's girlfriend, Tim was honestly nervous that Billy wouldn't move past her. Maybe it was projection. After all, Tim never did, not really. But he still had it in himself to fall in love again, albeit quietly, and let it slip by until he got over it. Now he can be happy seeing how happy Billy is, even chat up his girlfriend.

"Here, lemme show you how to sync it up with your phone," he says, taking the box again and holding out a hand expectantly for Billy's cellphone. If Billy had no clue what it was, Tim wouldn't honestly blame him or be surprised. The smartwatch definitely looked different from most of the ones on the market, and since it's his work, there were a lot of features you couldn't just look up.

"You hid it quite well, the being freaked out part, at least." I know I wouldn't have done as well. "And maybe Izzy looked at your ID, it's how I found out my birthday. Seems like a logical place to start."

Isabelle is about to move on, but the name catches at something in her brain and she pauses. She doesn't know Tim very well at all but she knows the name Steph well enough. She remembers the way Billy had been when she left, so utterly distraught to the point where he wanted to fight her.

She knows that Billy and Tim are friends, obviously, but she never knew they were that close.

"Not Steph as in Billy's Steph?" she asks, just to make sure. She could be totally off base, but somehow, she doesn't think she is.

Tim rubs a little nervously at the back of his neck. That was a fast conclusion.

"Yeah. Also my Steph," he admits. He mixes another drink, feeling like he'll need it.

"We dated on and off back home since I was 15. But it was really complicated between us before I arrived here. I heard elsewhere that she was around and younger than she was when I left Gotham, so I avoided her until I knew how to approach her. But I never got the chance to talk with her at all. Didn't even know she was dating Billy."

Billy tried to imagine eating so much chocolate that it made you sick. Well, he didn't have to imagine that hard because there'd been the one year he'd stolen a bunch of Halloween candy but that had been a lot of chocolate.

"And how come you had to think about that. How many times have you puked because you ate too many sweets?"
